Crown Hill

This last weekend Tom, Kevin and I went to Indianapolis.
Kevin took a weekend class of blacksmithing at Connor Prairie.
Tom and I explored the city.  We went to a huge cemetery name Crown Hill.
There are many notable people buried there, James Whitcomb Riley for one.

A sculpture of a child reading the book, Little Orphant Annie.
If you didn't know who James Whitcomb Riley is, this explains it.

With the good, come the bad.
The notorious robber of the 1930,'s
John Dillinger's grave.  I especially liked the toy replica gun.

This is the grand entrance to the cemetery.  It was a pretty day.

Here is the marker pointing to where the grave site is for the 23rd president of the United States.

President Harrison's headstone

I just thought this was an interesting arraignment.

Here is the Irsay family plot.  They are the owners of the Indianapolis Colts NFL football team.

This grave site was especially interesting with the trees and bushes and the long stair steps walking up to it.

The trees frame it very nicely.

And it had an in ground sprinkler system.
Here were some golf lovers.

The Robert Frost poem was a nice touch.  There was seating for visitors and also the nice planter on top.  A lot of thought went into this headstone.

This was just a big rock with the name engraved on it.

An obvious lover of music.

The tall big tree in the back I liked the shape of.  The tree stump in the front is actually a headstone.

A beautiful Angel watching over everyone.

This leads into a mausoleum. Quite beautiful with a lighthouse.
These little angels were around the building possibly for air vents?

This interesting area piqued my interest.  A sculpture of a boy kneeling on the bench.

He has something in his hand that he is looking at.
And it is an acorn.
Note the name and the inscription.
Very Original.

Lastly-A tennis enthusiast.

What I just showed you was a small piece of interesting history in this cemetery.
I hope it was enjoyable for you.

to screen or not to screen

This porch faces due west and in the summer especially it gets too hot to use and the sun glares in at dinnertime.
We found a unit called panorama by Stoitt that seems to have fixed our dilemma.
The company came out and put the wood up where the tracks for the screens will go.

We had to get the wood painted and then the company came back and installed the tracks and screen.  The screen had to be ordered for our dimensions.
The screen is made out of woven PVC and is very tough.

Right here the screens are going down.  We can completely enclose this like a screened in porch or have only one down to stop the sun.  The screens are supposed to stop 90 percent of the sun.
It seems to stop the breeze also.
We should really enjoy this.

Detroit Tigers American League Central Champs!

I started the baseball season with this picture from the Detroit Free Press.

Last night the Tigers clinched the American League Central Division.
They will start the playoffs on Saturday...they have a couple more regular season games to play, so they don't know who they will play yet.
The man on the left is Miguel Cabrerra who is in the running for the triple crown in baseball and the man on the right is Jim Leyland the manager of the Tigers.
It's going to be some long nights ahead.
GO GET EM TIGERS!

cards

I mentioned that I would show the cards I made last week.
A couple are also when we went to the Cincinnati Stamping Convention in August.

season ends

The past week the weather has just been perfect.  A nice breeze, the lower 70's, sunshine.  Many of the plants are wearing down, the sunflowers are hanging their heavy faces and are drying out.  The mums though are in their glorious splendor.  I love the perfect shapes of the two in the foreground.

I still am in awe of the size of the one on the right.

The giant zinnias with their rough looking flowers.  The orange color is just so pretty.

stampin

I got together with my stamping friends on saturday for a fun day.
We laugh and talk and just have an all around great time with lots of great food that Theresa made this time.  Here is one of her cards.  An embossed spiderweb and an Inky Antics folksy ghost with pretty patterned plaid paper.  Cute, cute envelope too.

A nice anniversary card with Morningstar kissing birds.

Thanksgiving cards with pretty patterned paper and DiNami stamps.

Michelle made halloween cards for her kids using the embossed spiderweb also.  The ghoulish stamps are just cute as can be.  She used heat embossing and glitter glue.  Colored pencils or markers to color in the pictures.

She also used her glittery watercolor paints on this card for her son.  He is a lion lover.
I am not sure of the stamping company for this stamp.
I will show my creations later on this week.

Pumpkin face

Goodbye Hot Summer
Hello Cool Fall
I picked this little wall hanging up at a quilt show this summer.
and it looks pretty cute.

Fall basket arraignment on the front porch.

That should make you smile when you come knockin on my door.

my sewing box

I found this great container that I use for my sewing box.
It keeps everything I need compartmentalized.  It's light and seals tightly and is roomy.
It's also clear so you can see what you have in it.
It is a 3 level Snapware.

Here you can see the 3 levels.

The other side

I was invited to a quilting club reunion in may and they made these and gave them away to everyone.  I really love it.  I love the happy colors of the 30's reproduction fabrics, and the log cabin block.

The inside has flannel where you can store your needles.  It is very roomy and I can keep them nice and neat.

These are the last pieces that I need to attach to the recent quilt top I put together.

Here I keep my other quilting tools in the drawer where I sit to work.

My sewing box sits with my in progress memorial quilt so it is up out of the way.  I have to get more hearts pinned onto it so I can keep it going too.
My friend Theresa is a container lover too (more so than me) and she keeps rubberstamping items in her snapware.  If you see one pick it up, you will find it really useful.

not the prettiest face

Here is another bird that stopped by the pond....a turkey vulture.  As I said, not the prettiest of faces.  They do make a statement when they take off though.....such a huge wingspan.  Here is a good site that tells about these birds.  It was very interesting.

feather and flower

Not a lot going on to report.  I picked up a couple of fun things to put in my pencil basket to look at while studying at night, a metal flower that says bloom and some fluffy yellow feathers.  Also you can see my bookmarks from  Thailand that have little tiny dolls on them.  Fun stuff to lighten it all up.

i never get tired of sunsets

The open area behind my house gives me so much pleasure and material for the blog.  I thought the colors were fantastic and the reflection off the pond too.  I especially like the different cloud shapes on the left.

I turned a little to the right and so much blue in the sky.  It's just an aaaaahhhh moment.  blue is such a calming color.  No mountains in the background, we are flat as can be in this part of Indiana.

my swing

When we moved we didn't take the wooden swingset because it was so heavy.  The swing was a Mothers Day gift one year.  We found a man who made the frame and Kevin sanded and stained the swing.  It was moved from the garage this weekend.

It's really nice to have it back.  I sit and watch the kingfisher and the turtle pop it's head up and the fish move around.  It's very relaxing.  Thanks to my guys for getting it all back together.

other colors

Brown sunflower, maybe a little spent before I could get his picture.

Yellow-orange sunflower

A short fuzzy faced sunflower

These mums were such a pretty color of lavender, I grabbed them at the grocery store.
Cooler weather is just around the corner....we hope.

kingfisher

This interesting bird sits at each end of our pond.  Swoops over it and dives for dinner.  It makes a rat a tat tat noise as it flys.  I've discovered it is a kingfisher and here is a really nice site that tells about it and all of it's calls.

It doesn't say anything about flying and diving!

new member

This cat showed up on our doorstep hungry, thin and we didn't know if she was pregnant or just had kittens.  I shut the door hoping she would go back from where she came from, but she was still there the next morning.  She put up the biggest rackett and I had to feed her.  She would sit on our front porch and sleep on our rocking chairs and not move.  I finally decided to take her to the vet to see if she had kittens in her.  She did not...she is so young they maybe did not survive when they wer born.  I had them start giving her shots and in a couple weeks we will get the spayed.  She is staying outside and is feeling much better with regular food and water.  Her eyes are as green as the bushes.  I have named her Tigerlily, and we call her Lily for short.

She walks around the house with me as my companion.  She hides in the bushes and acts like I don't see her.

Here she is walking with me...look at the size of this mum!
It was just the right spot for it.
Lily and I are signing off......

it's that time again

I haven't done much on the blog this past week because my classes started up.  I feel it will be a good semester and maybe will come out a bit more knowledgeable in the end.  Been trying to manage my time between family and meals, work and homework.  I have missed posting and have pictures to show so I will get a weeks worth in and schedule them for each day.  The Labor Day weekend went so fast...Tom and I drove to Detroit for the day and watched the Tigers play.  We had a nice time on our "date" together.
