This book takes place around the Ashland Ohio area. The author, Joe Mackall is a professor of English and Journalism at Ashland University. He lives among the Swartzentruber Amish in that area. This group of Amish are the most traditional of all the groups. Mr. Mackall has developed a good relationship with his neighbors the Shetler Family which is composed of 9 children and both parents and grandparents. This group of Amish do not believe in using lights on their buggy's nor even slow moving vehicle signs. They have only wooden chairs in the house. The church tells them how to live their lives, who they can talk with and whether they can accept a ride from the English. I enjoyed this book because it gavee me insight of why the Amish live their lives away from the outside world and why they deny themselves.
I give this book a 7 out of 10 stars.
